Biosphere
The part of the earth the supports life
Ecology
The study of interactions between organisms and between organisms and the enviroment
Abiotic Factors
Physical, non-living factors that can be affected by living organisms
Examples of Abiotic Factors
Water, Soil, Light, Temperature, Air
Biotic Factors
Living or once living organisms in their environment
Population
All individuals of a species that are in the same area at the same time
Community
Population of different species that interact in the same way
Ecosystem
Communities and the abiotic factors that affect them.
Biosphere
All of the ecosystems.
Organism
A single individual in a population.
What are some characteristics of populations?
Size, Density, Spacing
Limiting Factors
A limiting factor is any biotic or abiotic that restrict the number of individuals in a population.
What is Caring Capacity?
The largest number of individuals that an environment can support and maintain over a long period of time.
Biotic Potential
The rate of growth of a population if there no limiting factors. Mast populations never reach this.
What are different Predator/Prey relationships?
Symbioses, Mutualisms, Commensalism, and Parasitism
What is Symbiosis?
When two or more species live close together.
What is Mutualism?
Both specials benefit (example, hippos and oxpeckers)
What is Commensalism?
Benefits one species and the other species is not harmed.
What is Parasitism?
One organism benefits and the other is harmed (e.g., mosquitoes)
What is a habitat?
Physical location of where an organism lives
What is a niche?
The role of an organism in an ecosystem
What is the energy flow through an ecosystems?
Sun, produces (plants), consumers (animals), decomposers (plants/animals)
What is a food chain?
Shows the direction that energy flows. Example: Grass -> Mouse -> Owl -> Maggots
What is a food web?
A series of overlapping food chains
What is an ecological pyramid?
The bottom of the pyramid represents the producers. Each successive layer represents the next organism in the food chain.
