What was electricity first used for?
Electricity was first used for the telegraph, from the telegraph, communications steadily advanced with the telephone, radio, television and the electronic communications that we have today. The first uses of electricity were typically for outdoor lighting and performing industrial work such as mining, mills etc.
How did the term lineman begin?
Lineman came into being during the construction of the telegraph lines. Men working on the lines became known as Linemen.
List four key activities performed by a lineman to ensure a reliable power delivery system?
Making connections properly, stringing and sagging overhead conductors properly, installing underground cables properly, making underground terminations and splices properly.
Explain the battle of currents?
Thomas Edison believed DC was the better current to use for all purposes. Nikola Tesla believed that AC would be better used. The controversy centered on the safety and efficiency of the systems, Edison claimed that the AC system was extremely hazardous. While Tesla claimed that the DC system could not deliver power effectively over long distances. Tesla also proved that motors could deliver more horsepower efficiently with AC. AC at the time was being used by the State of New York to execute people by means of electric chair. This gave AC the label of the executioners current. Edison even went to the point of publicly electrocuting dogs to prove his point.
List two of the first three AC systems?
The Gold king mine Telluride, Colorado.
Willamette Falls, Oregon.
Niagara Falls New York.

What was wrong with early construction practices?
First power lines were constructed in larger cities without any standards and codes. These poles shared power, telegraph, telephone, fire alarm, and police alarm circuits. This practice had two major drawbacks first, linemen were getting electrocuted on an all too frequent basis, and second, the sheer number of wires blocked the sun light and darkened the cities.
What impact did Roosevelt's new deal of the 1930s have?
Roosevelt's new deal was unveiled in 1933 basically promising electricity to anyone who wanted it. Two key elements of the new deal where the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the REA, rural electrification act. Which was signed into effect on May 11, 1935. This act set into motion a mammoth undertaking in building power systems in the rural United States.
List the four types of power companies and describe their function.
1. Investor owned, large municipal, or federal utility structure: serves more than 500,000 customers and can have 1000 to 12,000 employees. They typically serve large loads and have a large number of circuits and substations. They will have a power supply department which buys, sells, and trades power based upon economics and load requirements. These companies tend to have more formal programs and procedures. Job descriptions, requirements, and career paths are well defined.

2. Small public power utility structure: rural electrical cooperatives, public utility districts, and municipalities fall into this category. Typically serves less than 100,000 customers and has less than 200 employees, they typically serve smaller loads and have a limited transmission system. The work is less specialized because of the types of facilities, and employees typically perform a wider variety of activities.

3. Large line contractors: employed more than 200 people, capable of working on large transmission, distribution, and substation projects all over the world. May also perform communications work, including fiber-optic installation.

4. Small line contractors: typically employee less than 200 employees, would have the capability to perform transmission, distribution, and substation projects on a smaller scale
How many customers would an IOU have as stated by the section?
Over 500,000
How many customers would a small public power utility have?
Less than 100,000
Which of the following positions would be considered entry-level positions?

Lineman, helper, meter reader, operator, system operator, staking engineer, vice president, electrical engineer, bidding technician.
Helper, meter reader
When was the occupational safety health act passed? This act created OSHA.
1970
What benefits do members of the American public power Association receive?

Online access to APPA members, library, and staff through its webpage.

A constant flow of the information needed to make daily decisions, including public power magazine, public power weekly, and alerts from APPA on urgent regulatory and legislative developments.
