Movement Education is an approach to teaching physical education that involves problem solving, guided-discovery and exploring methods with the effect of individualizing learning. This method applies coordinated and rhythmical body movements in learning situations. Movement Education is a newer approach to teaching that originates from the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s. Throughout this paper the concepts created by Rudolf Laban will be discussed along with the different methods of teaching involved in Movement Education as well as the movement analysis wheel. Also being explained will be the benefits of Movement Education and its ability to combat childhood obesity.

Loco-motor activities are meant to develop children’s gross-motor skills with movement of the body from place to place. Some physical abilities involving Loco-motor are walking, hopping, running and skipping. Children also apply attributes such as large, small or far and near to their movement. Overall they learn about “where” the body moves and “space” awareness.
Manipulative activities are those that involve controlled use of the hands and feet. Such physical abilities as throwing, catching, grasping and dribbling are all manipulative activities. This type of movement aids children in developing fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Allowing children to learn “how” and with what “effort” the body moves.
The third activity is Non-manipulative and is best described as movement of the body while staying in one place. Physical abilities such as twisting, turning, jumping and landing are all examples of Non-manipulative movement. This type of movement helps develop the child’s balance and coordination skills. Attributing to knowledge of relationships between people and objects.
Movement is one of the fundamentals of human development. Movement Education forms a major cornerstone of Physical Education, sports and activities. There are three well-known and useful teaching methods commonly used today. The first is the Direct Method
