Mugabe since he was elected has continued his socialist views, which makes his government more authoritarian them democratic. Some socialist policy that he has implemented for the most part has negatively affected Zimbabwe. For example, his socialist policies has decremented the economy. The once strong economy is now rapidly diminishing. The greatest example is the hyperinflation that occurred in that began in the early 1990’s all the way to 2008. The government lead by Mugabe decided to create Economic Structural Adjustment Programs (ESAP). The ESAP was designed by the IMF and World Bank (Just like we discussed in class). The policy were poorly created and damaged Zimbabwe’s economy. The program included land reforms and other social reforms that did not bring benefits to the people of Zimbabwe. The inflation was so high that Zimbabwe had to print out billion dollars bills. In order to buy a loaf of bread or milk you had to take your money in a suitcase. The government kept printing money in order to finance the war going on in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Most of the money was going to the army and government (The World Bank Group, 2012). The lack of confidence in the government also hurt Zimbabwe’s economy. Eventually in 2008, the government decided to stop printing out Zimbabwe currency and transition to the US dollar. Ever since Mugabe took position of president the position of prime minister was abolish and until 2009 there has been no prime minister. Although it’s democratic because it hold elections most of the time they are corrupted by Mugabe which has kept him in power. Since the time he was considered a war hero, Mugabe has had socialist view which has barred Zimbabwe social, economic, and political sectors. The economy that was once a strong one has crumbled to pieces, yet the government is unwilling to take the proper measure to repair it. The country went from having its own currency to having to use the dollars and euro. There has been only one dominating party which is the ZANU-PF. Many believe that this informal dictator will not step down until he is dead. Mugabe is 91 years old and continues to rule Zimbabwe through corruption and force. Throughout the years and different policy’s and reforms we can see that Mugabe was never for the people but just for himself and his small circle of people. Today Zimbabwe still has a struggling economy and the government only looks out for themselves. Having the same leader since independence that has authoritarian characteristics has not brought growth to the country of
