Workplace sexual harassment and discrimination during hiring makes the working sphere a sexist institution because they are a form of sex based discrimination. Sexual Harassment is not affection but rather a means of exerting dominance over the victim, the woman. Hiring discrimination is the act of not hiring a woman solely based on her sex. According to the U.S Equal Employment Commission, sexual discrimination can either lead to “a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating” or where “enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment”. In terms of the family being a sexist institution, examples of this can be seen in the honour killing epidemic. According an article in Middle East Quarterly entitled “Are Honour Killings Simply Domestic Violence?” by Phyllis Chesler, honour killings are usually perpetrated by “fathers against their teenage daughters and daughters in their early twenties. Wives and older-ages daughters may also be victims but to lesser extent.” The article also insinuated that the reason for these killings are usually due to the daughter bringing dishonour to her family by not wearing a hijab, seeking higher education, becoming too westernized etc. These two systems are sexist because they perpetrate violence toward women however many women still choose to participate in them.
