For most women, waking up in the morning, getting ready for their day by picking out their outfit of choice and doing their daily makeup routine, eventually driving to wherever they need to go, sounds like a typical morning. Having a happy marriage with someone who shares the same interest and starting a loving family with them doesn’t sound odd either. Many women in America, Canada, and other democratic countries take for granted how simple freedoms like those could result in a woman in Saudi Arabia, Libya or numerous other countries killed, imprisoned, or outlawed. Women are not allowed to drive or leave the home without a male chaperon. Inevitably, they are growing tired of depending on men for transportation. Many women are deciding to fight back and protest the ban on them driving. Al-Sharif was a woman who got arrested for a video of her that was posted on the internet by her friend. She was driving while complaining about how the ban was not beneficial at all. After she was released from jail, she decided to make a Facebook page called “Teach Me How to Drive so I Can Protect Myself”. It is a page for other activist to join and talk about their ideas and ways they could protest further. It currently has over 1,900 likes and it grows every month. Al-Sharif hopes it “encourages other women to get behind the wheel in masse for a day of protest” (Manal- Al Sharif). Not being able to drive does not sound like that big of a deal, but it is very unsafe if the driver is someone the woman does not know. Men have no laws prohibiting them from abusing or raping a women. Even if the woman was to take the incident to court, she would need a minimum of two witnesses willing to provide proof that what she is claiming happened is true. So if a man was to drive a woman he could rape her in the car or anywhere secluded and never get in trouble for it. It would be a lot safer if a woman could just drive herself places. That shows little girls that even if their family tells them they love them, their life, happiness, and even safety means less than the rest of the families health. No sane woman in democratic countries would even think about selling their child into a marriage so they could live a happy life and make money for food or whatever it is that they need. Naz Shah lived that exact life. Her father left her family for a 16 year old girl he found and married her. Because of him leaving her mother was not able to support the family, so she sold Naz to make money for the rest of the family.
