General William Tecumseh Sherman was born on February 8, 1820 in Ohio. He was one of eleven children. His parents were Charles Robert Sherman and Mary Hoyt Sherman. Charles Sherman was a distinguished lawyer, and until his unexpected death in 1829, he had been serving on the Ohio Supreme Court. William Sherman moved in with Thomas Ewing, a senator.
When he was 16, Sherman attended the famous military school West Point. Although he was an excellent student, he did not concur with the school’s methods, and he ended up graduating sixth in the class. After he graduated, he married Elling Boyle Ewing, the daughter of Thomas Ewing.
Sherman saw combat for the first time at the second Seminole War, though he didn’t participate in it. The first couple
