In Wide Sargasso Sea, the tone is a bit darker than in Jane Eyre. While Jane Eyre is a story of romance and true love with a few dark twists, Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of a young womans fall into madness. We get a glimpse into the psyche of Antoinette as her illness grips her. In contrast, Jane Eyre follows Jane as she enters the world and finds love.
Relating to this darker tone in Wide Sargasso Sea, forests are a motif. They symbolize Antoinette as she delves further into madness, as well as Rochester’s own future. Antoinette has a dream of being chased through a forest. The second time she has this dream she follows the man instead of running. The man takes her to a garden and she resists. Throughout the book, Jane sees many different models of religion. Mr. Brocklehurst uses religion to show the hypocrisies of English life. He pushes his beliefs on the students at Lowood through his running of the school. He wants to strip the students of pride by having them live in meager conditions, conditions almost unfit for any human. And he subjects them all to humiliation and forces his own twisted views onto their everyday lives. And yet he and his family hypocritically live in luxury while the students at Lowood are barely staying alive. Another model of religion is that of St. John Rivers. He believes one should give up ones own life to help others. He tries to get Jane to adopt these ways. He even asks her to join him when he goes to India work at a missionary. And while she does consider this for a while, this goes against her true self. She does not believe in these models of religion and instead has her own. Though not as extreme as these two, she does pray when there is trouble or a hard decision is at
