The play is set in a place where people are deeply religious and the character seem to believe that rooting anyone engaged in witchcraft in their community is God’s work. The community of Salem, Massachusetts has turned into madness due to superstition, paranoia, the persecution that happened without justification and the false accusation that occurred. But there are fights in the town that has no connection to religion.
This play teaches students a lesson about how people can do bad things when they are hysterical. For example, in the play, when Betty said, “You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor” to Abigail, Abigail became a bit hysterical and she pushed Betty aside and threatened the other girls that if they speak a word about what happened, they would die.
