Our history seems to have a strange way of repeating itself. Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible wrote about the Salem witch trials that took place in 1692. This was a time of mass hysteria caused by religious views, but it also was connected to some of the exact things that make humans imperfect: greed, lust, wrath, and even pride. Later on, that same hysteria reappeared during the McCarthyism era, for very similar reasons. So the question is, how much were these two time periods alike? The Crucible and McCarthyism are so similar, you would think witchery were involved. In both of these time periods, there was always someone who seemed to have a way with pointing fingers and naming names. In an excerpt from Hearings Before the House …show more content…
But rarely is there one who is just non-compliant and doesn’t say a word. But in The Crucible and the McCarthyism era, there was at least one. ¨Mr Seeger: I am not going to to answer any questions as to my association, my philosophical or religious beliefs or my political beliefs, or how I voted in any election, or any of these private affairs.” (Document E, 12-14.) For this, Mr.Seeger was blacklisted until the late 1960s. In The Crucible, a conversation between a man and his wife revealed the fate of he who didn’t speak. ¨Elizabeth: Giles is dead. He looks at her incredulously. Proctor: When were he hanged? Elizabeth, quietly factually: He were not hanged. He would not answer aye or nay to his indictment; for if he denied the charge they hang him surely, and auction out his property. So he stand mute, and died Christian under the law. And so his sons will have his farm. It is the law, for he could not be condemned a wizard without he answer the indictment, aye or nay.” (Document F, 4-11.) “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller is a play about The Salem Witch Trial;he is comparing it to the McCarthyism. He wrote this play to show that McCarthyism was just as crazy as the Salem Witch Trials. During the time Miller was writing this play, Joseph McCarthy was hunting for communists in America like the Salem judges were hunting for witches. Abigail Williams is the antagonist of the entire play, even though she is not the equivalent of McCarthy. She does have a real-life counterpart who is actually much younger, but just as responsible for the hysteria that took place in Salem.…

Almost every life event seems to have a hero and a villain who contrast each other. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller recreates a perfect example of this concept using two very important main characters. The Crucible itself is about the Salem witch trials which occurred in 1692. In short, it all started when a group of young girls, including Abigail Williams, were caught attempting witchcraft in the woods. When they were caught, they made up lies and flipped the accusations on other villagers that they did not like.…

In The Crucible he wrote about people being accused of doing something they did not do. He wrote The Crucible after his own experience of being accused of being someone he was not, though he did base the story from real events in Salem known as the Salem witch trials. He was begged to confess to being a communist, and to tell if anyone else he knew was also a communist. These examples are just like when we say all Muslims are terrorists. We force them to say they are terrorist and to tell us who are all other…

And how did it happen? by Ellen Schrecker: “Joseph McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin became notorious by flaunting ever changing lists of alleged communists within the state of department. Egged on by other politicians, he continued to make outrageous accusations while distorting or fabricating evidence.” This relates to the main antagonist Abigail Williams from Arthur Miller's play The Crucible because on Abigail’s quest to gain the love of John Proctor, she and her friends started the Salem witch hunt. The girls ran around accusing many people; the people they disliked and those who got in their way.…

When several young girls in the village were found dancing in the woods, they were accused of being bewitched. This very much resembles McCarthyism during the Red Scare in America during the 1950s. The Crucible’s author, Arthur Miller, was inspired by the random and rapid accusations of Communists during this time. In The Crucible one can find several scenes where characters are accused in a “snowball effect” in which one person is blamed, who then blames three other people. Those three people each blame two others in order…
