“Clothes are just not that important. They’re not status symbols any longer. They’re for fun.” (Gernreich). Some generations thought this while others thought “If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.” (Wintour). Fashion is important to us no matter what side we stand on. Throughout the century, fashion has been influenced by many things, such as cultural changes. Fashion during the 1960s was affected by many historical, political, and social events.

There are two sides to most stories, and fashion in the 60s is no different. Instead of fashion, there was anti-fashion a.k.a counterculturist. Counterculturists did not like the style of everyone else, so they made their own. The counterculturists, also known as hippies, started to rally against the U.S. because of their involvement in the Vietnam War (Pendergast, Pendergast, Johnson 891).The main style that hippies went for was dramatic: long, simple hair for both genders (The Turbulent the 1960s 172). They also liked unique things, homemade, and also tie-dying (The Turbulent the 1960s 174). The “hippie” lifestyle was just a minority movement that became identical with American youth during the 1960s. The counterculture youth of America completely broke almost all the values their parents held close. In addition, some of their slogans were, “Make love, not war. Don’t trust anyone over 30. Turn on, tune in, drop out. I am a human being - please do not fold, bend spindle, or mutilate.” (“Flower Power”). The hippie movement was all about peace, not violence.
