This country is has a very important history. But to start off, Dominican Republic became an independent country in February, 27 1844. This country was one of the first ones that Christopher columbus conquered it and claimed it for Spain in the year 1492. Later on as the Haitians received independence in 1804, the island then came under the rule of the rebellious ex-slave Toussaint L'Ouverture. With this the French retained the rest of the island until 1809, this was when the Dominicans tried to get their independence but failed as Spain regained control over them. Then 1821, the Dominicans, led by José Núñez de Cáceres, wanted their independence. The Dominicans sought to become part of Simón Bolívar's new independent Republic of Gran Colombia, but in 1822, the Haitians conquered the entire island. …show more content…
