The Dominican Republic, originally known as la Hispañola, including Haiti, was discovered by Christopher Columbus in December 5th, 1492. It is an island in the Caribbean which shares border with Haiti. In October of 1500, Governor De Bobadilla of Santo Domingo arrested Christopher Columbus and sent him in restraints to Spain. Columbus, during his third break to the new world, busy in a dispute with the representative of Santo Domingo, Hispaniola Columbus was later free and pardoned by the Queen of Spain, Queen Isabella. In the year 1502, Christopher returned to the island fleeing a storm, and requested harbor. His requested was denied and was sent back out into a hurricane in which 20 ships sank due to the bad weather. The Dominican Republic, …show more content…
Many also have relationships of compadrazgo or "co-parentage." A compadres or comadres are godparents who usually have a significant role in their godchildren's life and are selected prior the child's delivery. Godparents are likely to help with the child's schooling, occupation and even finances. Boys and men are anticipated to show machismo, or manliness, and personalismo which means putting one's self-respect and integrity beyond mental political and shared ideologies. Females are likely to be obedient, submissive and to be at home, a house wife. The main religion is Roman Catholic. Burials are done with the body being taken away to the prepared for their burial and later taken to the home so that friends, family, and neighbors come by to visit to pay their respects to the remaining family. A dead persons body is not preserved in the Dominican Republic. The Domincan Reouplics national dish is the sancocho. It has a variety of meats and vegetable which are stewed together. It can have everything from pork and seafood to cassava and sweet potatoes. The most popular meat is Chicken. Another usual plate is La Bandera or in Enlish, the flag. La bandera involves of the colors of the flag white rice and red beans with a side of fried green plantains, along with a meat of choice and salad. Baseball is the national sport, little boys usually want to be peloteros, baseball players when they grow up. Many Dominicans work for some type of factory. Dominican Republic is home to many sugar mills and tobacco workshops. It is also the oldest European settlement. The country had to be re-constructed in 1930 due to a hurricane.
