Oedipus Rex, a tragic hero crushed because of his hamartia, was not a perfect man by any means. He had all he wanted, but by the end of the story everything he thought was true turned out to be untrue. Although Oedipus considered fate to be real, he had more confidence in his own knowledge and achievements to control his future. Also, Oedipus’ dependence on himself made his purpose and insight the best way to establish all of his decisions. Oedipus was very short tempered and tended to get anger if he did not agree with someone.…
John L. Severance Fund (Fund, n.d)wrote a brief description of the artwork. Briefly, he said that the central figure in the painting was a strangely looking figure where the mouth is covered up by clustered ants and the bulging eyes are sealed, which represent the frustration of being in a dream where the senses are not operating. There are several people involved in this painting, excluding the strange figure. At the very left of the painting, a man with a bleeding face and amputated foot is spotted. This man could be a reference to the Myth of Oedipus, who killed his own father and had sexual relationship with his mother.…

Puerto Rico is among the few remaining colonies in the world. It can also be considered among the oldest, having at one time or another been under military occupation dating back to 1508. (Schimmer) Puerto Rico spent a lot of its past being under the rule of Spain but was aided by the United States in 1898. Although intimidated by the Americans, the Puerto Rican natives remained hopeful that the United States would help bring about great change in the colony. Hoping that the Americans could help mold the colony in the ways of democracy and freedom, the natives welcomed the United States, apprehensive at first but welcomed them nonetheless.…

Prompt #1 Hamartia Richard C. Armitage once said “I have a bit of pride, which is always my downfall.” Throughout history there have been many examples of leaders that had a flaw such as pride which lead to his/her downfall. For example, Napoleon Bonaparte, the emperor of France, was too arrogant as he overestimated his military power. Bonaparte’s dissatisfaction with the size of his empire caused him to fight for more land resulting in the downfall of himself and his nation. The Greek word Hamartia, a fatal flaw leading to the downfall of someone, applies to many historic leaders as well as Oedipus.…
A mystery in the traditional sense is a novel, play, or movie that deals with a puzzling crime. Although the play Oedipus Rex does not fall under this genre, it confronts the murder of the King Laios in which the transgressor is unknown. Throughout the play, Oedipus and his advisers seek to solve this enigma, which leads to a new discovery about King Oedipus’ past. The play introduces dramatic irony to the story which allows the reader to have insight on what is unknown.…
Oedipus as the perfect tragic hero is based on sarcasm because he wasn’t perfect, but he was great. In his scuffle against the malevolent of his life, written by fate, he brings doom to himself which is sad. Oedipus, which means "swell foot" in Greek, derives from his engorged feet. Oedipus is unfortunate since, his own parents had to throw him away on the 3rd day of his birth because he would kill his father and marry his mother. “I have no desire to suffer twice, and then in retrospect.”…

Stephen Ofori Tuffuor WCU ID: 874618 Professor Ayan Gangopadhyay January 27th 2016 Week Two Journal Entry January 27th, today we began reading the classical Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. This story really has an interesting plot; it unfolds as Oedipus becomes king of Thebes, a king whose hubris and hamartia makes him more ignorant and blind to the truth about his fate the gods had sealed for him. In this pagan and ancient tragedy, the city of Thebes is besieged with a plague, king Oedipus whose entire life is shrouded by darkness seeks the path of light and truth to purge the city he once redeemed from the singing sphinx.…
My client, Oedipus, is being tried for patricide and incest. I believe Oedipus is innocent and so should the jury because Oedipus said that most of his actions aren’t his fault. Oedipus shouldn’t be blamed for killing Laius since he acted in self-defense. Secondly his actions has already been decided by fate. If he has no control of his actions, then he shouldn’t be guilty of them.…
Oedipus finds out from Creon who is his brother in law that he sent to Delphi for information, that Apollo was the God who put the plague the Thebes until they “Drives the corruption frame the land, don’t harbor it any longer, past all cure, don’t nurse it in your soil-root it out!”-( Oedipus The King pg:576, line: 107-111)Oedipus says this as an oath before the chorus and the priest that the murder would be found and banished from the land. During this is one of the time you can really feel Oedipus anger rising. Oedipus decline from his status is not really an accident but a fate he could not really prevent. This is why I believe Oedipus deserved sympathy.…
Throughout the course of human history, reverence to one or many gods has affected the ways of life and literature. Higher powers controlling one’s life are commonly written about, referenced, and even evaded. It can be seen throughout the text Oedipus Rex, that Greek culture greatly influences Sophocles in displaying the thematic message that fate is ultimately unavoidable. Within the text of Oedipus Rex it can distinctly be seen that the Greek time period and lifestyle inspired and affected Sophocles in his writing.…
