Why Have Locavores Increase Jobs On A Local Economy?

The swirlwing green blades of grass hide the buzz of insects that surround the stands. The bustle of people hurrying from one free sample to the next, all simultaneously glisten under the warm April sun. The smell of fresh, ripe, and newly cut strawberries fill the air. Farmers markets, a place where Locavores buy fruits and vegetables in the hopes of supporting local farmers, helping the environment, and gaining nutritional benefits all at the same time. However, is it all just a hoax? Yes, the locavores do help support small farms, which in turn helps the community and local economy (Source A). Yes, this movement does increase jobs on a local scale. And, although the number of small farms has increased 20%, 1.2 million farms (Source E) since the beginning of this movement, is this such a good thing? The idea of only buying locally sourced food and vegetables might sound good but most locavores ignore the fact that it can decrease agricultural jobs and trade on a global scale. Take green beans for example. Most of England buys green beans from Kenya, and if you took that source of money away from Kenyan farmers, it could demolish …show more content…
Eating seasonally can diversify your palate and the foods that you get are more likely to be ripe and they taste better because fresh foods from local farms have longer to grow and ripen than supermarket foods. Ripened fruits and vegetables are shown to have more vitamins and minerals than those that have been picked too soon, which is why most locavores believe it’s healthier than traditional diets. However, eating local is not nessesacry in order to be healthy. In fact, Marion Nestle, a nutrition professor in New York, said that “a person making smart choices… can easily meet the body's needs.”(Source B). She also believes that “there will be… differences, but … marginal.” So, this means that it is not required to spend more money for added health benefits that are not necessary in order to be
