Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe is a very widely known name throughout schools and homes around the world. Although behind all of his writings, there is a life that very few are familiar with. From his parents dying at a young age, to having the people he loved ripped from his life, Poe had a very hard time getting through life which led to his demise. He was also an alcoholic and this made him to aggressive, and some people considered him to be too hard of a critic to work for the magazines and newspapers. Although many of his works can be found in text books around the world today, this showing his incredible ability to write stories despite his hardships and alcoholism. However his mysteriousness carried on until the day he died, this day has brought about many theories about the cause of his death that none can prove. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston Massachusetts. Poe was one of three children (Poe Museum). His parents were both actors; their names were David Poe Junior and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe (Kennedy 1). However both of them left the children at a very young age. His father David left him, and his mother Elizabeth died when he was only three years old. He then went to live in Richmond, Virginia with relatives. Money was always an issue for Poe and Allan, the relatives he went to live with. It was never easy for Poe to live with his relatives because of the constant tension that was held between his uncle and himself (Edgar Allan Poe Biography). In 1826 Poe went to the University of Virginia, Allan did not give Poe sufficient funds to cover all of the college fees. Poe began to gamble to try and get the money he needed for college, he did not succeed and ended up in debt. This had gotten him kicked out of the university and sent back home. Poe arrived home only to realize that his fiancé had gotten engaged to his neighbor. This devastated Poe so he decided to leave the Allan’s. In 1827 Poe decided to join the West Point Military Academy, Poe did exceptionally well at the military academy. After a year he was kicked out of the academy for “poor handling of his duties” (Edgar Allan Poe Biography). Once Poe was out of the military academy he started to focus on his writings. Poe moved to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Richmond to try and find a place to live. In 1831 to 1835 Poe stayed in Baltimore to live with his aunt and cousin. While in Richmond he worked for a magazine called the Southern Literary Messenger. While Poe was there the reputation as a cut-throat critic formed as a result of his drinking problems. His cousin Virginia became his love interest and had gotten married in 1836. A year later his reputation started to be detrimental to his career. As a result of his drinking problem, he left the magazine and had brief involvement in two other publishing companies called Burton’s Gentleman’s magazine and The Broadway Journal (Edgar Allan Poe Biography). Poe Always showed a love for writing, and was very talented at using his words to form a scene in the readers mind. In May 1827, Poe published his first book anonymously; this book was called Tamerlane and other poems. In his life time the book did not get much notice, it was after his death that it became more prominent. It was not until he started to work for newspaper that he began to get noticed. Once he had gotten older he experienced the heart break of losing the person he loved the most to another person, then the pain of having to see his wife die. Even after being kicked out of the University of Virginia, and the Military academy, he still tried to live his dream life of being a writer.
