Throughout an individual’s life they make their mark upon the world. Edgar Allan Poe is acknowledged as a master manipulator. His mysterious, and suspenseful approach has created some of the most complex, and intriguing short stories. Everyone creates memories, but some people leave legacies. Edgar Allan Poe was destined even during the course of his childhood. The upbringing of Poe had many hardships, but his misfortune molded him into a prodigy. He was born on January 19th 1809, and during this time his family lived in Boston Massachusetts. His parents were David Poe Jr., and Elizabeth Arnold Poe they both worked as actors. Edgar Allan Poe may not sound like a relationship kind of guy, but like many people he courted. “In 1836 he married his cousin, Virginia Clemm, and in 1839 received his first job as an editor” (Minor 5). With his wife by his side Edgar Allan Poe began his journey to success. “Poe was given his first job as an editor on the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia. During his two-year tenure, he gained considerable public attention with his stories” (May 4). This would have empowered the couple, but soon after disaster struck. Virginia became very sickly, and this caused complications to arise within the relationship. “In 1842 Poe’s young wife burst a blood vessel, and her deteriorating health over the next five years added greatly to the anxiety caused by lack of money.” (Minor 5) Within life there are always trials along the way one of Edgar’s most prominent obstacles was his wife becoming sick. There are phases in life when people hit rock bottom Poe was no exception. Alcohol was never an infatuation for Poe but, by the end of his life he was described as a depressed drunk. The hardships finally came crashing down, and he was unable to defeat his troubles. Initially he was able to continue doing great work, but he lost many jobs due to his bad habit. After his wife died his heart was heavy, and he fell ill because of his newfound addiction. Many of his stories emphasized the power of love, and death. In the end he was immersed in sorrow, and possibly depicted his struggles through writing. Edgar Allan Poe passed away on October 7th 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Edgar Allan Poe was laid to rest at the Westminster Presbyterian church yard.
