If Macbeth wasn’t a man capable of killing before the story began then he was nothing more than a tool used by the people around him. If he was nothing more than a tool then he wouldn’t be the main character and there wouldn’t be any question about who is responsible for the outcomes of his actions. At an early point in the play a character known as the sergeant described his actions in an earlier battle by stating “For brave Macbeth, well he deserved that name… Till he unseam’d him from the nave to the chaps, and fix’d his head upon our battlements.” (pg. 31) .From this quote one could understand that not only was he a brave soldier but he was also one who wasn’t afraid to get blood on his hands. After it becomes clear that he was a man ready for a gory situation if needed, it is easy to see that he wasn’t just some worthless tool. Afterwards he took the title of king of Scotland. What gave him the drive to lead such an assault? The senseless killing of his family by Macbeth did. No one told Macbeth that he needed to do that but he did anyway. Also he didn’t even try to have MacDuff killed too. This was a beyond a stupid choice, it was borderline suicidal. No sane person would do that. Only a paranoid and irrational person pulled down by the weight of guilt would do such a thing.
