The most powerful scene comes after the lawyer presents the cargo manifest of the Portuguese trade ship, the Tecora. It seems like the case is already won. They're all celebrating and they tell Mr. Baldwin they underestimated him and that he should indeed take this statement as a compliment. As they are talking, Mr. Baldwin is hit by a bystander and falls. He then stands and asks what he did to deserve this and Theodore says "you took the case, you took the case Mr. Baldwin, you took the case sir, you should take it as a compliment"(Franzoni). This to me is the most powerful scene because it shows the importance of compassion for the oppressed. From this compassion, a moral connotation is formed. Personally, it is a call for action because

In both of “The Banality of Heroism” and “The fair deserve the grape” slides, oppression is considered a major common problem. The history of the issue results in repetitive and social injustices in which both have been wide spread across the globe. However, these types of injustice mainly focus on age, racial backgrounds (Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, etc.) and specific gender quality (male or female). Even though these people respond to different types of oppression, the oppression, as you see here, is a common problem in both of these slides because it tries to gain the social and economic dominance from victims as well as inflicting pain towards them to get what the oppressors want.…

The ideology of slavery coerces its victims and masters alike to adhere to its theatrical and illusory mindset, as both actors are ingrained with the idea of a dichotomy between the powerful and powerless. Throughout Frederick Douglass’s novella, “The Heroic Slave,” Douglass underlines the heartfelt interaction between the white observer Mr. Listwell and the eloquent slave Madison Washington, altogether providing a call to action on the faults of slavery. Although his novella may seem too serendipitous upon first glance, it nonetheless exposes Douglass’s adamant view against the wretched condition of slaves through the fervent actions of abolitionist, Mr. Listwell. In contrast, within Herman Melville’s novella “Benito Cereno,” the author…

Frederick Douglass once stated that he “did not know [he] was a slave until [he] found out [he] couldn’t do the things [he] wanted” (2012). Slavery once held this man captive until he was able to escape and become “free.” Although he was able to do this, he still was never truly free, for he was a black man in America when the Fugitive Slave Act was still in place. He was asked to speak during a Fourth of July celebration held by the Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in 1852. Because it was a friendly audience, he used this platform in order to point out the irony of the holiday and sway people to become pro-abolition.…

“What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” On July 4, 1852, Frederick Douglas delivered his “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” speech. At the time this speech was delivered, Douglas was merely an escaped slave who had been taught to read and write by his slave owner’s wife. He used his gift of literacy to fight for the God-given rights of both African-Americans and women. In “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July,” Douglas cunningly uses bold diction and formatting in order to emphasize to his mostly white audience points of conviction concerning slaves.…
