What is an Environmental Policy?
An environmental policy statement is a declaration of an organizations commitment to the environment (Green Business Program, n.d.). The policy provides a summary of the organization’s environmental goals and how to achieve the goals. The organization can provide a unified vision through an environmental policy statement, in which employees can refer and identify actions of the organization. Additionally, an environmental policy can provide a clear explanation of the organization stance on environmental matters.
As stated in the ISO 14001:2004, environmental policy statements should include the following elements:
• Is appropriate to the nature, scale and environmental impacts of its activities, products

The policy outlines objectives in several areas including environmentally preferable purchasing, environmental restoration, waste reduction and management, energy efficiency, transportation, water conservation, and green building. Comparing DNR’s Environmental Policy with the requirements in ISO 14001, most items are identified. However, there are a few areas that I believe are lacking in the policy. The first item is the explicit mention of the commitment to continual improvement in the policy. The policy does mention a “One DNR” plan, which is a website that outlines DNR’s targets and goals methods they are using to achieve the targets and goals. However, there is still no explicit mention of DNRs commitment to continual …show more content…
It was difficult to locate the policy and some of the references seem as if they could be updated. Additionally, the “One DNR” site has a few broken hyper-links and references goals from 2012, such as “Reduce paper purchasing by 50% by 2012” (DNR, n.d.). The seemingly outdated goals and targets could be perceived as a lack of continual improvement and top management support. Lastly, the environmental policy statement was difficult to locate via the internet. Ideally, the policy would be located in an easy to identify location for both the public and employees. Overall, the policy provided key information and structure for the organization to achieve targets and

Due to regulations in the past, Farnsworth Paper Works, Inc., has an increasing buildup of fly ash on our property that has not been properly disposed. We would like to propose solutions to the Department of Natural Resources to allow us to receive permits to convert about half of our fly ash into low-grade fertilizer and to dispose of the rest of the unusable fly ash into the landfill on our property. Introduction Background Farnsworth Paper Works, Inc., which is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) office for region 4, produces over a thousand tons of fly ash every year. Fly ash is an inorganic remnant resulting from wood waste burned for heat. Previously, Farnsworth disposed of the fly ash into the back lot that is a permeable landfill, which was given a Type III classification and that meant it was any unprepared land area used for waste disposal.…

It has been challenged many times, but the authority of the NPS to interpret it and implement policy always seems to have the final say. Explanation and definitions could have been originally included in the act rather than in the Lane Letter, but this likely would’ve limited the freedom of the NPS to interpret the Act and allow for policy to change along with new scientific understanding. If the Act were to be directly amended today to update its wordage with modern terminology, especially in regard to concepts such as conservation, ecosystem management, and recreation, it is likely that current political pressures would sway Congress toward a decision that may undermine its original purpose. Therefore, it is probably best to leave it as is and continue to explain and reaffirm it in other pieces of…
