1. “ Beacause you simply cannot draw these things out forever. At some point, you just pull off the Band-Aid and it hurts, but then it’s over and you’re relieved.” – Page 7.

This statement expressed by Miles Halter explains that when one faces problems or challenges, the most efficient way to approach them is to tackle them head-on rather than trying to ignore them. It also explains that there comes a time in our lives when certain things become inevitable whether it be good-byes like in Miles’ case or times to move on from the past. At the time of his statement, Miles was saying his good-byes to his mother and father before moving away to Culver Creek High School.

“…we have to forgive to survive in the Labyrinth.” – Page 218

This quote said by Miles Halter is expressed in his final paper for Dr.Hyde in which he accepts that the only solution to surviving in the labyrinth of life is by forgiving others and not holding grudges against things we cannot change.

I can relate to this quote extremely well because there was a time when I was betrayed by a friend and I thought it was the end of the world. Being only 11 at the time, having been betrayed by my best friend had hit me hard and I thought that I would never be able to live normally again. After holding a grudge against them for a week thinking that it would have benefited me in some sort of way, I realized that there was no difference in their overall satisfaction while it was concerning me extensively. At the time I was still young so we just started talking again and we had no more problems but as I reflect on it now I realize that I subconsciously did exactly what Miles did when he forgave Alaska. Although my situation was on a much lesser scale and the problem was essentially irrelevant I often reflect on how my life would be today considering that we are still best friends 5 years

In Clark and McDonald’s (2010) text, the theme of the fantasy genre is dispelled through an analysis of the “realization” of Ofelia’s experiences in a fantasy world. The article describes the various aspects adult-themed behaviors that are often interjected into Ofelia’s imagination, which makes the fantasy world more like the “real world” in the plot of this film. The depiction of real life as a more dangerous environment is another major problem with the escapist theme of Pan’s Labyrinth. Ofelia’s intersecting experiences between the Spanish Civil War and the Underworld define similar dangers that Ofelia must face as a child. Franco's Civil War was certainly a horrific event in Spanish history, yet the premise of escaping reality is not…

Since he was unable to hand down the crown to his son, he did the unthinkable. “He threw himself down from a rocky height into the sea and was killed.” This courageous act set out monarchy to the side and welcomed a new form of government know as democracy.…

My Junior year of high school, two best friends on my cheerleading team had a falling out and the events between them greatly affected their ability to work together. We were all members of the same stunt group along with another girl who was unaware of the problem. In practice, none of our stunts were working very well because both girls were putting less energy into the lifting me so the other would have to put more into it. I was not aware that they had a falling out, but after being dropped on the floor multiple times, I took them aside to talk to them. They refused to talk to me together, so I talked to them one on one.…

Sometimes forgiveness is a hard concept for people to grasp and others forgive too easily, but when do we know when to forgive or whom we should forgive? What happens when we do not forgive? In “The Powwow at the End of the World,” Sherman Alexie experienced several mishaps in his reservation and even the surrounding areas, for example, the water levels were raising, the dams were breaking, and the cities and towns were flooding. Even though all of those events were happening, Alexie was told to forgive every single one of those events because after each event, something lead to a blessing for him and his community. As a building full of treasures, artifacts, and knowledge burns down, what is the one thing you would save and why?…

As stated by Dr. Seuss, “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities.” This metaphor conveys the message that fantasy makes real concepts appear different, allowing us to examine our problems from a safer distance. Realities in our lives such as family and growing up are represented in a different light in Alan Garner’s mythic novel “The Owl Service” and Jim Henson’s fantasy film “Labyrinth”. Looking through the wrong end of a telescope is a metaphor and symbolizes how the audience sees reality in the way fantasy shows it. “The Owls Service” provides the audience with the “wrong end of the telescope” allowing them to see parallels between growing up in the fantastical and real world.…

In the book, Looking for Alaska, written by John Green, the labyrinth is a topic debated over and interpreted in different ways based on each character the reader learns about. Alaska Young initially raised the question, but then it was left to be interpreted by the Colonel and Miles. The labyrinth itself is something anyone could portray, but Alaska had laid out the basis of it by calling it, “the labyrinth of suffering’(Green 82)”. In this essay I intend to discuss the variety of interpretations given to the readers by the characters in this book along with how these characters have found a way to escape or cope with the labyrinth. . To start one needs to define what a labyrinth is and where it had originated from inside the book, Looking…

The Labyrinth – The Form of Architecture Manifestation Human beings are visually driven. What we ‘see’ is an important factor in how we view the world and our surroundings. Well before we have the capacity to speak or understand speech, we have the capacity to react to visual stimuli. Seeing leads to perception – defined as the way the human brain “gives order and meaning to the sensations it receives.” It is within this order that we organize our external environment, and this organization of external factors forms our experience.…
