Cheerleading Stunts

My Junior year of high school, two best friends on my cheerleading team had a falling out and the events between them greatly affected their ability to work together. We were all members of the same stunt group along with another girl who was unaware of the problem. In practice, none of our stunts were working very well because both girls were putting less energy into the lifting me so the other would have to put more into it. I was not aware that they had a falling out, but after being dropped on the floor multiple times, I took them aside to talk to them. They refused to talk to me together, so I talked to them one on one. It was hard to remain calm after accumulating so many bruises because of how they handled their problems, but I mentally

As my second level 1 Fieldwork, I chose to volunteer for the Raleigh County Special Olympics Cheerleading team. There were four cheerleaders whose deficits ranged from Down syndrome, psychological, speech, low muscle tone, also across the autism spectrum. In which, Cheerleading enhances the following: attention span, comprehension, organization, sequencing, increased endurance, postural control, and increases social skills. 1923, at the University of Minnesota, women were permitted to participate in cheerleading.[19][20] However, it took time for other schools to follow. In the late 1920s, many school manuals and newspapers that were published still referred to cheerleaders as "chap," "fellow," and "man".[21] Women cheerleaders were overlooked until the 1940s. In the 1940s, collegiate men were drafted for World War II, creating the opportunity for more women to make their way onto sporting event sidelines.[22] As noted by Kieran Scott in Ultimate Cheerleading: "Girls really took over for the first time.…

People don’t think cheerleading is a sport because everyone goes to support the players, they don’t notice the cheerleader. “Those who feel cheerleading should not be a sport claim that cheerleading's main purpose is to support other athletes, and not to compete against other cheerleading squads” (Proquest Staff). When there is a timeout, or it’s in between quarters, the cheerleaders show off what they have been working on. Another reason is many people say that they don’t have such a high risk of getting injured. This is definitely not true because the flyer could not be caught, bases and backspots can be kicked.…

Perhaps the biggest effect of the development of NCA was the upbringing of competitive cheerleading. Since hybrid cheer and sideline cheer could not be ruled as a sport, that did not mean competitive cheer did not have a chance. Johnson and Sailors (2013) described competitive cheer as a squad that only competes against other competitive squads in events held by cheer organizations (p.257). Competitive cheer fills the guidelines of obtaining physical activity and a competitive nature against other teams but NCAA still ruled it out. NCAA stated that competitive cheer should be ruled out because it does not have standardized rules and scoring systems.…

After reading the required chapters for this post, there was a part from chapter 10 that really stood out to me. It was when they were talking about ostracism. This is when you often get the “silent treatment” in your relationship and get ignored on purposes. I had no idea there was an actual term for when this happens and found it to be really interesting to read about and see how it affects people differently. Part of the reason I think this was so interesting to me is because it has happened to me before and I was confused as to why it was happening.…

Another one my closest friends did not speak for almost 4 months, we did not argue or anything, Folger et al. (2013) argues that “behavioral responses to hurt may be similar to those for anger, but also include acquiescence to the other’s behavior and expressions of invulnerability” (p. 50); I agree with this because after noticing that she stopped answering my calls or text me back, I got tired of it, my hurt turned into anger and then just let it go. On my birthday she called, & I ignored it; however, I listened to the voicemail, because I knew her so well, I could tell something was not right. I could no longer be upset with her on my birthday and I was afraid that something might wrong.…

It started off easy with a few jumps and spirit fingers, but then the difficult parts came. We had to all do cartwheels.…
