Photosynthesis is a plant’s mechanism of converting sunlight and CO2 into energy in the form of organic material (Hohmann-Marriott and Blankenship 2011). Plant respiration is the process of using energy and oxygen to produce CO2 (Gonzalez-Meler et al. 2004). Almost all plants reproduce and respire, therefore it is important to know what factors could affect the rate of photosynthesis and respiration to better understand how plants function.
Some research has shown that elevated CO2 concentrations may determine plant productivity by affecting plant physiological processes, and ecosystem structure and functions such as photosynthesis ( Xu et al. 1987). However, other researchers have conducted experiments that found other results. Two plants, one in a chamber of low CO2 and one in a chamber with ambient CO2, were put in separate chambers with set temperature and light, the net rate of CO2 exchange was then recorded. This resulted in the conclusion that the rate of photosynthesis and respiration per unit mass have either been lower or not had any significant difference at elevated CO2 concentrations (Bunce 2005).
No research has been done on plants grown in high and low CO2 concentrations and then comparing rates of photosynthesis and respiration in chambers with equal CO2 concentrations.
