Purpose and Background Cells divide in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is used to produce cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell for growth, asexual reproduction, or repair after injury. Cells that are produced by mitosis are diploid, meaning that they have two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Meiosis is used to produce haploid cells that have only one set of chromosomes, a mix of chromosomes from both parents. Meiosis produces cells that are genetically unique from their parent cells.…
Interactive Question 7.2 Cite some experimental evidence that indicates that membrane proteins drift. A good form of experimental evidence is Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching, aka FRAP. In the FRAP process, membrane proteins are labelled with a green fluorescent protein, and part of the plasma membrane is “bleached” with a laser, causing them to lose their fluorescence. The part that was bleached will eventually become fluorescent again, as molecules drift in by diffusion.…

Caffeine Impact on Goldfish Metabolism Introduction Metabolism is a process that enable organisms to maintain their life. Metabolism can be measured in numerous parameters. Within this experiment in order to measure the metabolism rate by determined the level of dissolved oxygen. Goldfish is an example of poikilotherm that are organisms that are influenced by the environment surrounding them. Thus, the manipulation of surrounding can influence the metabolism rate due them being ectotherms.…
This species was introduced into the UK in the 1970s as food source. It spread quickly up and downstream and human introduction, although illegal, is still continuing. It may travel over land to colonise near freshwater. Its negative impact is mainly due to the loss of the native crayfish species, the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) through spread of disease and direct competition. Furthermore, the Signal crayfish is also impacting the river banks as it uses to burrow into them, creating instability of the vegetation and the ground.…
Demonstration of Cellular Respiration Inside Lima Beans Cells in Vitro Purpose: Cellular respiration is a series of metabolic reactions that take place in the mitochondria and produce chemical energy in the form of ATP by the breakdown of food molecules. There are three processes involved in cellular respiration; glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain. During this processes, glucose is oxidized by a series of redox reactions and its electrons and hydrogen ions are donated to two electron carriers called NAD+ and FAD.…
Average Metabolic Rate Difference of Goldfish in Dark vs. Ambient Light Introduction Metabolism is an interesting field of study to better understand what is happening inside of the body of different organisms that keep them alive. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) were used for this experiment since these small animals metabolism can be easily influenced by different variables. This is due to the fact that goldfish are poikilothermic whose internal temperature is influenced by their surroundings. Oxygen consumption was used to measure the metabolic rate when goldfish are in ambient light as the control and dark as the experimental variable.…
Introduction The Chesapeake Bay that is 200 miles long is considered the largest estuary in the United States. It is home to more than 17 million people (NOAA). Baltimore, one of the most important North Atlantic port is located on the Chesapeake Bay. Oysters are one of the biggest resources of the Chesapeake bay.…
Found in lakes, ponds and any area that well have any rocky substance or logs. Rusty Crayfish, is an invader that has invaded lakes in the northern reagan. There robust claws that most members of the Orconectes genius don't have makes then an unique but dangerous species . It was first indentificaded as “Rusty ” in Belgrade, great pond in the late 1968. It curentaly was founded in Michigan, Massachusetts, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico and parts in New england expect wisconsin, canada and Ontario.…
26. In point form list four ways in which photosynthesis and cellular respiration and interdependent. Include the specific stages and molecules for both processes in your answers. 1. The glucose formed during the Calvin cycle in photosynthesis by some G3P molecules breaking off is used to release ATP during cellular respiration.…
There are many biotic factors that are being impacted in the lake’s ecosystem. However, the most affected animals include the crayfish, clams, and mayfly. Crayfish need calcium in order to maintain a healthy exoskeleton. However, when a lake’s pH decreases, most of the minerals diminish as well. Affecting the crayfish in the process as they are weak and their source of food is being limited as well.…
Determining The Process of Photosynthesis And Cellular Respiration Using Elodea and Yeast Introduction Photosynthesis is an essential process to life on earth, in which plants and other organisms use sunlight to create food from oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Cellular respiration is when energy in food is released and converted to ATP, which is then used as chemical energy to complete tasks within a cell. This process usually requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are similar in some areas and different in others. The purpose of both of the process is to produce energy, but they have different ways of achieving this goal.…
Lizard-fish and croaker’s have similar habitats, but lizard-fish are more commonly found in deep water which has less oxygen available. A study done on aerobic and anaerobic capacity in muscle tissue states that elasmobranchs do not move as often and have a lower aerobic capacity than teleost fishes (Dickson, 1993). Teleost fish and lizard-fish are similar, meaning lizard-fish have a higher anaerobic capacity than elasmobranchs. Elasmobranchs and teleost fish are similar to the three species used in this experiment because they use anaerobic metabolism for swimming away quickly (Dickson, 1993). White muscle in elasmobranchs uses anaerobic metabolism during bursts of energy that causes them to move quickly (Dickson, 1993), which lizard-fish do the same.…
Introduction: Leaf Disk float in water alone. When a solution consisting of a small amount of sodium bicarbonate is added to the water it causes the leaf disk to sink. As photosynthesis continues in the leaf disk it releases oxygen and causes the leaf disk to rise. While cellular respiration is occurring also the rate that the disk raise is an in implicit measurement of the net rate of photosynthesis. The independent variable in this lab is the solution and the light because it can be controlled.…
The present study suggest goldfish are ectotherms and temperature effects respiratory rate. The decrease of the water temperature relates to the goldfish respiratory rate. The body temperature of the gold fish influenced the rate of respiration. Although the data reflects as temperature decreased the goldfish number of breaths also decreased, further errors could have occurred in the experiment. Each groups ability to maintain the set water temperature and the count of the number of breaths per minutes may have affected the results in the experiment.…
