I want to continue with narrative’s model; frame of reference. When Gravity’s Rainbow points to the fact that gravity is a fictitious force and the related concept of their control has to be rethought, it never loses sight of the fact that the effects of gravity cannot be ignored. Pynchon’s novel thus does not present a world where “reality has become as relative as time and space”, as more than one critic has claimed, but Gravity’s Rainbow’s vision as well as its narrative structure is better understood in the more detailed terms of relativity theory that the text introduces in relation to gravity. The novel’s narrative structure, as well as its metaphorical use of relativity theory with the elevator experiment at its center, does not support…
Book Arrangement: When Britain was in danger and distress during World War II, the country’s radio stations called upon Clive Staples Lewis to deliver a simple, earnest message concerning the Christian faith to the despairing population. The broadcasts were well received, and Lewis later published these talks as three separate works: Broadcast Talks (1942), Christian Behavior (1943), and Beyond Personality (1944). Eventually, Lewis merged the trio into a single body: Mere Christianity. This piece housed a preface, a foreword, and four distinct “books” that each targeted a separate portion of Christian theology. Prior to the primary reading, the Preface described Lewis’s process of transposing his spoken words into written text, and the Foreword provided Kathleen Norris’s favorable view of both the book and author.…

The mosaic Christ as the Good Shepherd c. 425-426 is a beautiful work of art. The reasons behind this work of art being not only beautiful but also overall a functional piece of art is the elements of the mosaic its self. To create unity and balance in a piece of art there are certain elements of design as well as the principle of design that need to be followed. In this image, there are numerous indications that it follows these guidelines. For example, there is a consistent color theme throughout the mosaic.…
According to Thomas C. Foster whenever characters in literature share a meal it is considered a communion. Just because meals in literature are considered a communion that does not necessarily mean that they are holy. Sharing a meal is an “act of sharing and peace” (Foster 8). Eating food is considered such a personal thing that people only want to share meals with people they are comfortable being around. If an author includes a scene about a meal in their story it is always meant to serve a purpose, such as showing how characters are getting along with each other.…
“If this should be the case with you, you will eternally curse this day, and will curse the day that ever you was born…” When first hearing this quote some people might be intimidated, and others may think what they have done to deserve being talked to like this. However, back in the 18th century this sermon was presented to people such as yourself. This sermon was presented to a fairly large group of people on July 8th, 1741. The man that gave this speech was Jonathan Edwards. Edwards was a revivalist preacher that was very open and forthcoming with how he felt.…
When you walk into a church you may realize that there are serval paintings, but what you may have not noticed is their significance. If you look at each painting closely you may notice that they tell a story. The Nativity with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel is a piece of art history which uses iconography and religion to create a narrative. The Nativity is not only a piece of art, but it also is an altarpiece. Since an altar is where offerings for a church are held, the images that appeared on the altarpiece carry the most significance.…
There are many layers of representations and symbols behind the Tabernacle. However, above all, the existence of the Tabernacle is a living symbol of God’s presence. While Israelites were walking through the wilderness, God demonstrated that He was with them all the time. “For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliever you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you.” (Deuteronomy 23:14)…

They are also seen carrying a olive branch in their mouths, a symbol for peace. In the story of Noah’s ark, Noah releases a dove to find land; the dove then returns with a olive branch, a symbol that the flood had ended. The dove, outside of the Bible, has been seen to represent divinity, hope,…
Water, one of the highest of holy rebirth references in existence. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy the two characters, the boy and the man, take a long journey, including a struggle of death versus life shown through the use of symbols to represent both sides of the struggle. One of the heaviest symbols in the novel is McCarthy's use of biblical references in many forms to portray feelings of hope and rebirth/resurrection, while also showing filth and irony in that of the water in the new yet extinct world. McCarthy presents the symbol of water in a very Biblical rich manor. “One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.…
In the, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards’ purpose is to scare his people, the Puritans. He describes what hell is and that people are worthy of hell if the will of God is not followed properly. Through the use of rhetorical devices such as imagery and strong diction and language, Edwards plan is to persuade all sinners to repent for their sins and ask God for forgiveness. Throughout the sermon he expresses in much detail what Hell and suffering looks and feels like and the ways to avoid hell and have eternal happiness in Heaven. Through imagery, on the eleventh line of the sermon he describes what hell looks like by saying, “The wrath of God burns against them; the pit is prepared and fire made ready for them; and the furnace hot and ready to admit them.”…
This will be a description of “The Lamentation” by Giotto di Bondone (1305). One thing that stands out in this painting is the use of line. The artist’s use and qualities of the lines brings out the purpose and meaning of the painting, as well as what is actual and implied. The fresco painting depicts the body of Christ, Christ’s supporters, and the Angels in heaven after he had been crucified.…
