According to Thomas C. Foster whenever characters in literature share a meal it is considered a communion. Just because meals in literature are considered a communion that does not necessarily mean that they are holy. Sharing a meal is an “act of sharing and peace” (Foster 8). Eating food is considered such a personal thing that people only want to share meals with people they are comfortable being around. If an author includes a scene about a meal in their story it is always meant to serve a purpose, such as showing how characters are getting along with each other. When a meal in a story ends badly it is usually not a very good sign. For example, in The Lord of the Flies the boys on the island share many meals together that are representative …show more content…
Writers use common biblical archetypes in their stories such as the four horsemen, serpents, floods, plagues, and flames in their stories to add a deeper meaning to their stories and help readers to understand the ways characters act. Biblical allusions are not always obvious and easy to see; sometimes you have to be able to recognize the main idea because the details are not all the same. The novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez is filled with biblical allusions, such as Patria building her home on rock alludes to Matthew 7:24, in which the Bible says that those who build their house on rock will not be brought down by …show more content…
A physical deformity is symbolic for moral, emotional, or psychological wounds or deformities. Shakespeare used physical deformities to show that a character was morally corrupt, because the Elizabethans believed that one’s closeness to God was shown by the outward appearance of a person. The hero of a story always has some form of marking to set him apart and make him different. The deformity is usually metaphorical for something about the characters personality. Authors use injuries to symbolize spiritual and physical wounds. A character that has scars represents that nobody gets through life without being affected. For example, Scar from The Lion King has a red scar on his face, which differentiates him from his brother Mufasa and also shows that Scar has had struggles in life. The way Scar acts shows that the scar on his face isn’t just physical but a deep emotional

A writer needs to have a compelling reason to include a meal scene in a literary work, due to the fact that meal scenes are so “inherently uninteresting” that they need an unseen meaning. In chapter 18 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor the main idea is how drowning is symbolic of baptism. In Morrison’s Song of Solomon, Milkman gets wet three times, an allusion to the form of Christian baptism in which the person is submerged three times in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. But it is not always baptism, it can mean something different like in Africa, drowning is associated with the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage is the mysterious, treacherous, and a hellish journey across the Atlantic during which many African slaves were thrown overboard either dead or alive, it has itself taken on mythic associations within literature, representing the unknown and the world of the dead.…

Another example used by Foster is scoliosis in Richard III. Foster states that Richard III, as a person, is “morally and spiritually twisted” (Foster 133).
