The detail of the weather not only coincides with the tone of the writing, but also symbolizes the struggles in chasing the American dream. At one point in the novel Gatsby is trying so hard to reach his dream, and so many obstacles are getting in his way that Nick begins to help fight his battle to reach Daisy, “Aware of the loud beating of my own heart I pulled the door against the increasing rain.” (Fitzgerald 86) Nick is trying to help Gatsby when they encounter Tom in New York, as the rain becomes harder Gatsby becomes more uncomfortable and further from his Dream because Tom and the storm get in his way. When Nick is first taken through The Valley of Ashes to get to town he describes it in great detail, “This is a valley of ashes - a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air.” (Fitzgerald 23) This quote is describing how the world at the time was turning into ash due to the industrial revolution, but also the blind eye the rich show to where their wealth is coming from.
