In this essay I will express what characteristics define a true friendship. This paper will include specific relationships which can be considered as a friendship. The essay will also provide examples of the flaws in a friendship and how some of these friendships will not last long. The positive relationships of a friendship conclude of a good man being friends with the good, the one who loves the friend of the one who is loved, a friend who loves may be hated by the other person, and opposites are friends. I will then determine which relationship I feel has the qualities to be everlasting and beneficial in a friendship. This relationship appears to be the friendship where you have love and hate. In the text Socrates states “Very young children, for instance, don’t feel love and may even hate their parents when they’re being punished by them, but that doesn’t make any difference” (Lysis 213a). According to this quote from the text friends can do certain things such as punish or treat you hateful, but you still have a desire to love them no matter what the issue is. For example, your friend may disagree with the decisions you have made and choose to distant there selves for you until they are not mad, but they still love you the same they may be just coping with the situation the best they know how. However the dialogue talks about how Hippothales gives Lysis all of these praises for being so wonderful and great looking. While Hippothales strongly admires Lysis in return Lysis does not appear to even think of Hippothales in the same manner. To sum up why the other options were excluded in everlasting friendship was due to the friendships not being true or everlasting. In the majority of these options the relationship may be beneficial on one part or in both parts but it appears to be beneficial for a period of time. That would make the friendship not true or even everlasting once the friends have been benefit they now would have no need to be friends. I will reflect back to the examples on why the friendship with Menexenus and Lysis is true friendship and why the other options are eliminated. The relationships that Menexenus and Lysis have together, even Socrates realize how fortunate these two are to have each other at such a young age. All of the other friendships that were positive just did not result in the same trait as having a friend who shares good characteristics but not in similarity. A person cannot go wrong if both seek good traits and it does not matter whether they seek well in a different way long as they seek well. The friendship where opposites attract has to be eliminated because the friendship would not even be consistent, once the person had been healed or perished. They would not seek the doctor’s knowledge to be helped and the doctor would not aid the patient if he was healthy or dead. The analogy of this friendship is
