The film explores racism and bias as it relates to interracial marriage. Both the Mexian American family and African American family were biased against each other. Sterotypical jokes were thrown from both families. Lucia father made jokes about the Marcus’s father having bad credit and Marcus’s father made a comment about not leaving his car with “you people”. As she turn around to greet him, she takes one look at him and faints . Even though this scene is overexagerated and kind of funny, it made me think about how others reactions to the color of ones skin can be very hurtful. When counseling people of minority I’ll take into consideration that people spend their whole lives dealing with those type of hurtful interactions. It’s part of that client’s experience being who they are. It also made me think about how having to deal with microaggrestions all of your life can create hurt and anger in someone.
The film also addresses cultural norms and traditions within Mexican and African culture. I learned that it is tradition in African Ameican culture for the bride and groom to hop over a broom once their vows are completed. I also learned that it is traditional to have a cloth and rossary put around the groom and bride during the ceremony in Mexican culture.
The film also made me take a deeper look into the difficulties one has to deal with when being in an interacial relationship. One’s cultural identity can be a big part of how one makes decisions and chooses to live their live. When your partner does not share the same cultural beleifs, values and traditions it can bring added hurdles to bear or over come in the
