The article, “Vocabulary Plus Technology,” by Thomas DeVere Wolsey, Linda Smetana, and Dana LGrsiham begins by describing how students retain new vocabulary words and other components of learning new words. The authors begin their studies with two statements they assumed were true. These statements were learning new vocabulary is a social interaction, we need to use the words, and the words need to have meaning to use. The authors emphasize the importance of before, during, and after reading and how this was developed over 70 years ago (p. 450). There are also various modifications teachers have developed to this technique and the article suggests an after-reading strategy called, “Vocabulary Self Collection and Strategy Plus,” (VSS+). This technique provides students with ways to help students become familiar with words so they can relate it to the object or idea the word represents. This shows VSS+ is a higher order thinking skill because it students are applying the concept of the new word, rather than memorizing the definition. The first article, “Vocabulary Plus Technology,” integrates technology to help students learn vocabulary through all learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.). The last two articles do not discuss technology at all. This means not everyone has the same techniques to help increase a child’s vocabulary and how to help them retain the words. Also, the technology article and the last article, ““Words Are Wonderful: Interactive, Time-Efficient Strategies to Teach Meaning Vocabulary,” discuss working with ELL and SES students. This is important because many people do not have a lot of background with students who do not speak fluent English, therefore it is even more important to educate and give them as many techniques/strategies as
