A major social implication of this technology is the cost. Although the first two rounds of IVF and PGD are government funded, both of these rounds have a chance of being unsuccessful. Factors such as the age of the woman and the number of embryos transferred will reflect on whether the pregnancy is successful or not. The older the woman is, the lower chance of having a successful pregnancy. If the first two rounds of this technology fail for the woman then they are left to either pay for the next round/s themselves, look at other options for example a segregate or adoption or the couple may just give up. The problem with carrying on with the process of IVF and PGD is the cost of each round. A round of in-vitro fertilization alone is $10,000- $12,000 New Zealand dollars. A round of IVF and PGD combined is a total of $15,000 New Zealand dollars. These prices show how unaffordable this technology is to most couples who are not guaranteed a successful pregnancy. Couples end up taking loans or putting this money on their mortgage in order to carry on with these procedures. Some couples are not in the financial position to be taking out loans or increasing their mortgages so they are given no other option but to give up on this type of assisted reproduction. Every couple is looking to produce a healthy child who is not affected by any genetic disorders. However not everyone is entitled to the use of PGD and therefore not everyone can benefit from this technology and what it is capable of. People who are possible candidates to undergo the process of PGD
