In 1942 Germany, the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, wanted to create a population of what he called the “perfect race.” The “perfect race” consisted people carrying the traits of blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin. Hitler believed that whoever carried these specific traits were superior over others. Designer babies are no different. A designer baby is created by following some certain criteria of what a person wants them to be. I believe that although there are situations in which science is needed, but when it comes to creating your “perfect child”, it is immoral. By genetically modifying a baby to create the “perfect child”, it will create many problems in society and interfere with religion by playing God.

Since we are now given the opportunity to lessen the chance of a baby to be born with any diseases or disability, such as down syndrome, the process of PGD will create a world of designer children where they could become the superior people of society. If designer babies become more common and those who can’t afford it are the only ones who have their children born naturally, and those who are born naturally would be considered inferior. According to Kant’s principle of distributive justice, Kant would disagree with PGD because it does not guarantee access to everyone. Since everyone will not be able to have access, due to how expensive it is, only the rich can afford it. This goes against Kant’s categorical imperative because it cannot be universalized.
