Visual Analysis June 28, 1914 while visiting Sarajevo, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in the streets by an unknown gunman. The fallout from this event led to the First World War and the fight for justice. Militaries now needed more men in their ranks to fight the coming battles. The purpose of this advertisement was to recruit young men to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. The U.S. Marines used text and visual support to inspire men to enlist to fight in World War I.
The designer of this advertisement used textual support to create a positive feeling that would result in enlisting in the Marine Corps. The textual component of this advertisement stated “Go Over The Top With U.S. Marines.” While the literal translation of this statement means go over the top of a trench with the Marine Corps. The ad implies that the Marines will take you to the top, and help you reach your full potential. They use the word “top” to make you believe if you enlist then you will “go over the top” and will be a hero. The word top can also be defined as being the best, such as being top recruit. This word “top” in the United States Marines translates to first sergeant, known as the “Top,” the highest ranking enlisted man in the company. When someone looks at this advertisement, the textual support gives the idea that a person who enlists should go with the “top” military division, the U.S. Marines.
