The biggest reason that this movie was a hit because of the critics Pauline Kale and Bosley Crowther whose reviews made this movie shine in Hollywood in the 1960s. In the 1960s people did not watch movie that had so much violence in it so when this movie came out it was shocking to everyone and disappointing to everyone. Pauline Kale as critic was ready to change everyone view on the movie by defending the movie saying that it was okay for movies to have violence. In her fourteen pages’ review Pauline Kale states, “The brutality that comes out of this innocence is far more shocking than the calculated brutalities of mean killers,” (Kale).
