One is a participant observation in which the observer interacts with the subject. And the other is detached observation. Where the observer simply watches the subject. The poetic’s technique used in the poem is in a way that he becomes a detached observer of the scenario within the poem. ‘Notice how the oldest girl’. Giving no judgment and speaking in their perspective, telling their story.
Structure: The poem begins with a positive and optimistic language. As it begins, it’s in the middle of the lives of the family that are already in progress. There was no backstory given of the past. Readers would begin to know once they would read the whole poem. The poem soon attaches itself to the woman’s point of view, that the children that were excited at the start, she wishes they weren’t. As the poem moves on it begins to change to drama and sadness.
Language: The being mostly consisting of future tenses. Bruce Dawe uses a lot of Australian Cultural Context in the poem to set the ambience for moving so that the readers can connect better.
