In the article, How American’s Understand the Equality of the Sexes Alexis De Tocqueville compares how women are viewed in Europe versus in America. In other words, De Tocqueville claims that in Europe women are solely used for sex. However in America, women’s intellect is respected. He still believes that women are nowhere near equal to men.
As De Tocqueville puts it, “by thus attempting to make one sex equal to the other, both are degraded;” In this passage, De Tocqueville is suggesting that we cannot attempt to make the sexes equal without putting one of them down. My view is that women should have more rights. I do agree with De Tocqueville in the sense that there will never be perfect equality. We can never have that. Even today, racism and sexism still occurs even though we have made countless steps to defeat them. I would also have to disagree with this piece also though. More specifically, I would argue that times have changed since this article was written. There are a lot more rights for women now. The roles are less strict now. For example, women are allowed to vote now. Women are freer to explore their creative and even political thoughts. Even though we have made a lot of improvement, we are still not equal. Although someone might object that women and men are equal, I maintain the fact that men and women are still not equal. If I am right that the two sexes are not equal is the case, then it
