Review of Hope’s Boy Priscilla Hope Bridge attempted to raise her child the best she could with what she had and what she knew. Unfortunately, what she had and what she knew was not enough. Her son, Andy, was four years when he first left her to live with his grandmother. He was around five-and-a-half years when he was returned to her and seven when he said his final goodbye.…
Researchers only had 40% of Lucy’s skeleton so they used comparison and inferring as a technique to reconstruct Lucy. While putting together Lucy’s skeleton, researchers found out that she was very small and an adult. They decided to use a modern human skeleton to infer some of the missing pieces. The team filled in some of the missing parts using other fossils and making a physical model of the skeleton which they would use as a basis of the reconstruction (Prehistoric Autopsy video). Professor Robin Crompton used a series of footprint trails from the Laetoli area to find more information about bipedalism of afarensis.…
”(2) Other scientists have done research looking for comparisons between the skeletal structure of the homo floreisienis and other hominins. They found that “[t]he neurocranial shape of H. floresiensis closely resembles that of H. erectus s.l.” (6) Out of all the homo erectus the neurocranial shape closely represents that of the early Eurasian group. However, scientists are unsure if the resemblance is due to “a close phylogenetic relationship or to a size-related convergence in…
“The part of us that has to be burned away is something like the deadwood on the bush; it has to go, to be burned in the terrible fire of reality, until there is nothing left but… what we are meant to be” (Dekker 1). This is the quote the authors choose as a preface to the story, which I believe fits perfectly with the theme about acceptance of the darker side of your personality. All teenager Janeal Mikkado wants is to leave her gypsy home, and heritage, behind and make a life for herself. Lifetime criminal Salazar Sanso apprehends her and coerces her into a deal - he will spare Janeal's father, who is making a deal with the DEA, if Janeal can find the $1 million her father is hiding. This leads to a fiery confrontation, which transforms…

Within every folktale or legend, there is a quest for a hero to complete. Although the hero in most of these stories are male, there is always a sense of importance with the hero even if they are female. Therefore, in order to identify how the quests differ based on whether the hero is male or female in the Slavic culture, one must analyze both the hero and the quest in the Slavic folktales “Baba Yaga,” and “llya the Murom.” In the Slavic folktale “Baba Yaga” there is a quest presented throughout most of the story, for which only a female would be given. The hero presented with this quest is a little girl, who must use her kind nature in order to stay alive.…
The article I found is on the discovery of Homo naledi. Happened upon only by chance, the struggle to find Homo naledi was as hard as placing it with either Australopithecus or Homo. I found this article interesting because the discovery of a potentially new species could give us a clearer picture of our ancestors. We may never know the complete story, but as long as we keep on researching and exploring new ideas, our understanding will grow. In addition to adding to our understanding of human origins, the article has a dash of mystery and highlights the importance of women in the field.…
I found that this documentary caught my attention and interest very well. The experiment that Lyn did with her orangutan; Chantek, amazed me so much. As many people may disagree with animal testing, I think that this experiment of teaching Chantek ASL was fascinating. We all knew that Chimpanzees could learn ASL but who knew that testing beyond and turning society’s heads to orangutans would benefit us all so much? Lyn and her helpers at the university took good care of Chantek and raised him as if he was a human infant.…
1. Why is the study of Brain size a poor way to study the evolution of intellect: Describe 3 important characteristics relevant to the evolution of the brain and intelligence. The study of brain size is a poor way to study the evolution of intellect for the reason that brain size does not correlate well with intelligence within a species, but it can be with differences in intelligence between species through some adjustments for body size. One important characteristic relevant to the evolution of the brain and intelligence are modern humans’ brain size lacking in relation for an accurate explanation of intelligence without modifications being applied to it to exist.…
Monkey Business Everything has an origin, even us humans, but how, when, and where did we evolve? Steven Pinker’s Revenge of the Nerds contains two parts that. The following essay will focus on the film Boyhood (2014) in attempts to explain how three significant events in the main character’s life story, Mason, exemplify developmental changes in the lifespan. There will be references to three developmental domains, cognitive development in terms of information processing, conceptual resources and perceptual skill, physical development referring to growth in the process of puberty and psychosocial development being the expansion of the personality, including the gain of social attitudes and skills particularly according to Erikson theory, the battle of identity vs role diffusion (Sigelman, 2013, p. 38). Boyhood is a story, based over a 12-year period, of growing up captured through the eyes of a…

Imagine living in a small dirty shack, with little to eat, and the constant fear of a police raiding. When an all white government gained power in South Africa in 1948, they began enforcing policies of racial segregation under a system of legislation that it called apartheid (Millett, 117). Apartheid is a former policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups in the Republic of South Africa (Webster Dictionary). The autobiography Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane, enlightens the understanding of this cruel system and how it affected the everyday life experiences of the people in South Africa during that time. Kaffir Boy illustrated the true terrors the blacks had to suffer through such as discrimination,…

To begin, Darwin’s theory includes the idea that humans will continually evolve, as shown in “The Time Machine”. The Time Traveler is first introduced to what he describes as a communistic society through the Eloi. The Eloi people are genderless passing, telling the reader that the difference of sexes are not an issue in the future. Due to Social Darwinism, the Eloi have also become frail, stupid, and lazy people who rely on the Morlocks to do the work for them. Despite the environment change to an almost desert like wasteland, the Morlocks and Eloi have evolved through Social Darwinism and not through environmental change.…
