Chantek Animal Testing

Decent Essays
I found that this documentary caught my attention and interest very well. The experiment that Lyn did with her orangutan; Chantek, amazed me so much. As many people may disagree with animal testing, I think that this experiment of teaching Chantek ASL was fascinating. We all knew that Chimpanzees could learn ASL but who knew that testing beyond and turning society’s heads to orangutans would benefit us all so much? Lyn and her helpers at the university took good care of Chantek and raised him as if he was a human infant. However, I found it very sad when after 8 years of being at the university Chantek was banned. It must have been a very drastic transition for both Chantek and Lyn because they were used to their living establishment. This experiment impressed me greatly, yet if Lyn was better funded and more equipped with helpers etc; Chantek would’ve in my opinion; been able to learn ASL faster and gotten further in teaching Orangutans to communicate with humans. …show more content…
The fact that she had this opportunity is life changing, especially at the beginning of her career it was really a jump start to her employment. I think that we, as our community and civilisation, should open up more to the idea of pursuing further animal testing because if this experiment went so well with Lyn and Chantek; who knows what the future holds? We can take this practice to really grasp what an incredible thing we have. That we have tought animals to communicate with humans in ways

As stated by Professor Charles R Magel,“Ask the experimenters why they test on animals and the answer is: ‘Because animals are like us’. Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals and the answer is ‘Because the animals are not like us’. Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction” (Source #4). Scientists believe that animals are more similar to us in body anatomy and biology than personality. However, they’re more like us human in a sense of consciousness rather than body.…

Jeremy Rifkin argues through intensive research that animals and humans have their differences, however they are very similar to the human species than we have ever imagined.. For an example, animals can experience pain, suffering, joy and excitement. His statement is entirely true. Biologically, since humans are considered as mammals, other creatures specified as a “mammal” have the same organs and wiring systems within their brain. Meaning, there is a high chance that animals do indeed have feelings.…

This documentary was emotional to say the least. The relationship of the conservator with the crew that helps him and the animals is stunningly intricate and it is hard to even understand how they can leave these orangutans in the wild knowing the illegal burning and logging that is happening in Sumatra without even mentioning the pet trade and other dramatic reasons. I would be devastated to let an animal leave in a jungle soon to be palm oil plantation since I would care so much about the future and the welfare of the animal, but also the whole species and biodiversity present in these tropical forests. That’s why I want to take part in the conservation movement, but not being a conservationist since I would not be able to handle the different atrocities of the job.…
