TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis and spreads through the air by a person who is suffering from TB. It can also spread by contact or sharing of fluids. If an infected person coughs on his or her hands and wiped them on someone else, or spit from their mouth flies into someone else 's mouth, there is a very high chance of infection. There is a treatment for the virus, however, but before a person gets a treatment they must take a TB Skin test ("Tuberculosis TB Test Information"). Anybody can take a test for Tuberculosis, which is a good thing because it can be fatal. Getting tested and covering the mouth when coughing, sneezing, or laughing are the best ways to prevent

This type of tuberculosis is called Latent TB. If it turns into active tuberculosis then the virus will start to tear at the scar tissue and most likely spread to the lungs (Ramen). TB needs to be treated before it becomes active and spreads into the lungs, kidneys, or brain. People can walk around without knowing if they have TB. Tuberculosis is a slow growing organism and would take about four to eight weeks to appear in tests. It spreads fast, but it grows very slowly and can be very unnoticeable. The Tuberculosis virus takes time to get treated, but those who get treated right away may be in luck. The sooner somebody knows about the virus, the more chances they have of surviving it. Everybody is unprepared for the disease, but that is why doctors say that getting checked is the best way to go. Doctors want to know if there is a virus eating away at the person and if there is any way they can still help before it is too late ("Tuberculosis: Signs and Symptoms"). Doctors that work in health care facilities are risking themselves each day just to help those that need treatment for TB. Sometimes a lot of people are not even aware that they have it, it is also important that the person knows with who he or she is with and where they are. Since the virus is fatal, it is always important to know where the high-risk areas of infection are, like some of them could be South-East Asia, Europe, Indonesia, or even Africa and North America. When a person finds out that they have TB, it can be very shocking. That is why therapists are sometimes needed to help calm down a person who has just found out they have the deadly virus. It was also mentioned that men would almost always have a positive result for Active Tuberculosis, this means that they have a different social nature than women do (Schoenstadt). Tuberculosis can happen to anyone regardless of age, it can happen to children of

Mass incarceration, underfunding, overcrowding in prisons, and unjust policies have led to the spread of infectious diseases (HIV, TB) across US prisons mostly impacting African Americans and Latinos. During the years of 1985-1992 the same time the United States was engaged in its war on drugs there were major outbreaks of Tuberculosis across the nation and many stemming from New York prisons for example. Before major discoveries in the field of medicine it was estimated that 80 percent of deaths in prison were caused by TB(Farmer pg.241 2002), but with the evolution of medicine also came the evolution of Tuberculosis’s ability to become resistant to antibiotics. The definitive diagnosis is through an acid fast stain of the bacteria in a lab, obtained through multiple sputum cultures and a chest x-ray showing abnormalities of the lungs. There is antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis but the bacteria is very drug resistant due to the stiff structure of the cell wall and as a result, the antibiotic course is long and sometimes dangerous due to serious side effects. The most common antibiotics used to treat TB are isoniazid and rifampicin for a minimum of six months. There are drug-resistant strains of TB known as MDR-TB and in these cases, several drugs are used at once to give treatment a better chance at success. Those who have latent TB are treated right away with one antibiotic to prevent the disease from becoming active at some point in time.…

In the latent form of tuberculosis, the TB bacteria lie within the body in a dormant state. However, latent TB shows no symptons and is not contagious but has the potential to become active. Once TB becomes active, the disease becomes symptomatic and can very easily be transmitted to others. Once TB becomes active within the lungs, one might experience chronic couging with mucus and/or blood, chills, fatigue, fever, weight loss and/or loss of appetite, and last but certainly not least, night sweats! The longer active TB goes without being treated, one is at a much higher risk for the infection to spread through the bloodstream causing bone infections which could potentially be very painful and destroy your joints, not to mention meningitis, and the possibility of hindering the liver, kidneys, and hearts ability to function properly (Medical News Today,…
