Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health concerns in our society. Anxiety and depression are not the same, but they often occur together. It 's not uncommon for someone with an anxiety disorder to also suffer from depression. In fact, over 50% of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, but when it becomes excessive is when it is classified as a disorder. Some research suggests that depression affects over 350 million people internationally. Because of these statistics, many individuals, including healthcare professionals, are continually looking for ways to progress and advance healthcare practices and procedures in treating anxiety disorders and depression.
With that said, there has been an increasing popularity of utilizing methods of complementary and alternative medicine. Complementary and alternative medicine can be referred to as “CAM”. CAM is more acquainted to health professionals in treating physical and psychiatric symptoms and disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Complementary medicine is used in addition to a functional and traditional medical treatment, while alternative medicine is anything that can substitute established conventual procedures. CAM is unique because it makes an extra effort to emphasize the importance of the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of an individual.
