Weberg's Complexity Leadership Analysis

With an ever changing and evolving healthcare system, leaders must be purvey to complexity of the nature of the advancing field. According to Weberg (2012), traditional leaders know how to apply known to solutions to known problems, but in healthcare the answers are seldomly known and issues are hard to identify before they occur. Weberg’s article, “Complexity Leadership: A Healthcare Imperative,” attempts to explain how traditional leadership skills are no match for healthcare and the effects of a traditionally trained leaders can be detrimental to this environment. Traditional leadership theories and models focus on specific traits of leaders and interactions between leaders and follower. The author believes there are three glitches related to traditional leaders: 1) they are linear thinkers, 2) they portray organizational culture unawareness, and 3) they are unprepared for innovation (Weberg, 2012). However, healthcare leadership needs to be just the opposite and aspire to be more innovative both socially and economically. The focus of a healthcare leader should be more about the relationships than placing power in a title of a position. While the author does give theoretical examples, they are just that and lack statistical evidence. The healthcare system relies heavily on results that are quantifiable. Without concrete evidence, many healthcare leaders may view this article as only theoretical and may not want to implement the ideas. While the paper explained why complexity leadership is more valuable in the healthcare system than traditional leadership, the paper did not explain how to identify the leaders that will be able to adapt to the new style.
