I chose to focus on the overall feeling of the exhibition as well as the two works of artist Judy Natal that are in the collection. I believe those two works fully capture the description of the exhibition. The titles of her works are Totems and Mirror Trail. Judy Natal’s artwork, Totems and Mirror Trail, were created in 2001 and 2000, respectively, in Southern California. Mirror Trail shows elements of movement through the hills and contrasting light sources through the use of black and white photography. Totems is more stationary than Mirror Trail, it also uses the element of contrasting light to show details and there is empty white space to force the eye to focus on the subject matter. Natal uses the art of black and white photography to create her artwork. The final creations are on a 24x20in. selenium toned gelatin silver print. Natal uses letters of the alphabet, specifically vowels, and nature as her artwork subject matter. Both pieces cause you to feel curiosity about where the letters are going or why are they where they are. The black and white photography enhances the seriousness of the works by eliminating colors that could have otherwise been a distraction from the plain letters. When viewing Mirror Trail, the trail of letters reminded me of conversations you may have with a friend or even with yourself while walking along a hiking trail. Totems reminded me of the stick figure people I used to draw as a kid, some of them were even next to a tree just like in the photograph. The work relates to the studies of the variations between the different regions of the world. The art in the Transcendence exhibition would probably differ greatly from another exhibition that is located in a different part of the world.
