Tobacco plant is one of the most widely used in ancient time for rituals and medicinal purposes. As human developed in time, new technique has been introduced to use the tobacco plant which people currently use and smoke cigarettes today. Cigarette is one of the controversial topics in our society whether to fully ban or lessen the use of cigarettes. People have so much to say regarding this hot topic; however, nothing is implemented. We all know that cigarette is harmful to young people, most especially those who start smoking at a very young age. I propose that the Federal Government should change the legal age of smoking tobacco from 18 to 25 years of age because tobacco use has its addictive effects, harmful to environment, and causes death.
First, cigarette is addictive because of its content like nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most addictive chemical that manufacturer put to their cigarettes. Cigarettes today deliver nicotine more quickly than ever before. Tobacco companies also use additives and chemicals to make them more addictive. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Research suggests that children and teens may be especially sensitive to nicotine, making it easier for them to become addicted.” The younger the users of the cigarettes are the more likely they are susceptible to addiction caused by nicotine.
