The speaker says that he used to be this really bright star in the sky in a really dark time. Some of the literary devices that demonstrate this are the following. There is the personification of childhood and friendship and first love glow because he guided those younger than him. Then there are simile comparing childhood friendships and love to sweet dreams “Childhood and youth, friendship and love’s first glow / Have fled like sweet dreams” (line 3-4). There is also Alliteration in “Above the blind and battling multitude” ( line 10). Nostalgia and depression are all there it is a lamentation of the person that was lost, Wordsworth, making the tone very depressing.
To conclude, William Wordsworth and Percy Bysshe Shelley were both poets of the romantic era. They had great works and this two poem shows similar characteristics and themes.
