Virtue And Moral Character In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics

Aristotle was a great philosopher and scholar who wrote on various topics and subjects in his lifetime. Some of the issues and subjects he addressed include biology, ethics, chemistry, logic, and biology. Among his well-known works is the Nicomachean Ethics where he explores different topics to explain virtue and moral character. Among the attributes he discusses one is friendship. Aristotle affirms that three forms of friendship include utility friendship, friendship for desires and good friendship. Aristotle contends since friendship is a complete virtue it need to be highly valued and he describes it to be beyond both justice and honor. Theories pertaining friendship by Aristotle are divided into the following; self-love that is love of utility and for pleasure is self-centeredness. On the contrary, self love as a virtue is significant and a good person can attain it. Thus, these three forms of love, portray human beings as being political in personality.
