In a lot of ways, readers are intrigued about innocent people being attacked and although it is often sad, love the gore that follows.
In some ways, another great horror factor is monster entities, which are made believe but everyone enjoys the imagination that follows with them. Seeing how they can look, how they can actually feel, and what they do that makes them the antagonist. It lets people explore the dark imagination which is in all of our minds.
A great reason horror stories are so popular in today's films and novels is that it allows people to experience and watch horror experiences from afar. To be able to go in depth on the darker side of their dreams, and even their nightmares. This in turn allows people to experience their own ones and to see the possible outcomes were only they could guess before. So in general, everyone believes a good horror story comes from factors like pain, sorrow, misery, the beast within idea, and getting all of these different combinations and putting them into one big ball of horror. Which in turn, is why everyone is so intrigued with horror
