The Wizard of Oz is a novel written in 1939 by L. Frank Baum. In the novel, the main character Dorothy, and her house, are whisked away from her hometown in Kansas to the Land of Oz by a tornado. There. After accidently landing her house atop s woman known as the Wicked Witch of the East, Glenda the Good Witch of the South appears, bestows the silver slippers upon Dorothy, and sets her on her way to find the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz, inside his Emerald City. So, Dorothy sets out along the yellow brick road because she believes it is the only way she can return home. Along the way, she meets the Scarecrow, in need of a brain; the Tin Woodsman, in need of a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, in need of some courage. When the crew finally reach the emerald palace, the Wizard informs them that he can indeed grant all their wishes, but will only do so if they take out the Wicked Witch of the West, and bring him her broomstick. The crew has nothing to do but agree, so they set out for the west. While travelling through a forest, Dorothy and Toto are captured by the witch’s flying monkeys. Toto escapes, and leads their friends to the castle where the witch lights the Scarecrow on fire. Dorothy throws a bucket of water on him to put it out, also hitting the Witch, who melts. When the gang returns with the broomstick, the Wizard still refuses to grant their wishes. This is when Toto revels that the Wizard is not great or powerful, but is just a man behind a curtain.
