“The Things They Carried” is a short story based on Tim O’Brien’s experience in the Vietnam War. Tim O’Brien served in the Vietnam War for two years when he was fresh out of college in 1968. The Vietnam War was the source of a lot of destruction in the Vietnamese cities and caused a lot of death. Although the Vietnam War caused by the United States perceived responsibility to stop the spread of communism, it had negative consequences on the Americans and Vietnamese citizens alike. So much destruction and death was caused. Was the Vietnam War worth all of the deaths and destruction to stop communism?
The purpose of the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism in South Vietnam. A lot of American soldiers and Vietnamese citizens were killed due to the war. More than 100 American troop’s bodies were found at the end each day. Many of the ones who survived suffered from diseases and were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a disease most veterans are diagnosed with after serving the war. Seeing their friends die during the war and not being able to do anything about it traumatized them. Some will never get cured, some will take a while to get over it. After the war, a lot of Vietnamese citizens got sick due to the bombs the United States had used to fight against North Vietnam. As Friedrichs states, “hundreds of thousands of United States soldiers were injured and traumatized, and tens of thousands lost their lives” (Friedrichs 131). A lot of the…
