The Survivors Kathee Koliwitz Analysis

The artwork I chose for the art criticism project was ‘The Survivors’ by Kathe Kollwitz. The piece was created in 1923 in Berlin, Germany, where she resided with her husband. She and her husband resided in a poorer area, and it is believed to have contributed too much of her artwork style. ‘The Survivors’ is currently displayed in two museums, the MoMA and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum. Nevertheless, the piece is enjoyable to me, as I feel it conveys an extremely important message. The darkness and the hollowness of the piece grab the attention of one’s eye immediately, begging you to form an opinion as to why Kollwitz painted it. The first element I will describe, is the way Kollwitz centered main object of her painting. In the piece, there …show more content…
The absence of color captures the deep emotion of the figures in such a compelling way. More so, Kollwitz creates an extreme contrast from the men looming in the background and from the children surrounding her by adding negative space. This element could allow for the painting to be critiqued since it does not allow for viewers to have an idea, through color, of who the people in the painting may represent. Conversely, the lack of color could be argued that viewers should not be trying to tie the painting to a specific person, but rather something that may have occurred in their lifetime. Personally, the absence of color and the use of negative space allows for one to experience the raw emotion of each face. Depicting, that at this time, there is not happiness which could be represented by color but hollowness through dark …show more content…
Texture is used to create the faces and add to the form of the people in the painting, also she uses value to highlight special focus areas like the sunken portions of the woman’s face. It was done in charcoal so there are areas where there are heavy grazes, making the people not look perfect. The texture, lines, value, and the absence of color all form to create a sense of unity. It allows for the artwork to flow well together. More so, it invokes unity among the people surrounding the main woman. Through this important woman, each person in the painting is not only tied to her but to each other. If a critique were to look at this piece, it would be impossible to miss the texture and value the artist used. Consequently, some may consider the painting to be too dark not allowing for viewers to grasp the true beauty of what Kollwitz has

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

This painting shows these themes because the artist have painted what they saw but included more and less. Something that these painters include are more idealized colors to the stereotype of a perfect sunset--as shown in my picture--to add romance and aestheticism. Some things that they, the painters, exclude are the real things in life such as the demented part of nature and how the world really looks. These painters don’t add the ugly things in life like dead animals or conflict between nature and mammals such as humans. These feature are included and excluded to show a more aesthetic and or idealized version of life and nature.…

The more I looked at it and researched, I realized it had a deeper purpose than just showing abstract shapes and nicely chosen colors. This painting makes me feel like Odili Odita was proud to show everyone the two different worlds he was a part of. I admire the way he used such simple materials to explain something so complex. I also feel a sense of being proud of being African American by combining the two cultures into something so beautiful. This painting gives me a sense of pride and knowing that my history is something special and important and it should be acknowledged as such.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
