The majority of settlers going to New England were families escaping English Civil War and the persecution of Puritans that came with it. They were looking for religious freedom for themselves. In John Winthrop’s A Model of Christian Charity, directed towards the people headed towards New England on the Arabella, stated that they must work together for God and to build “a city upon a hill” for everyone to see. Whereas, the settlers going to the Chesapeake region were often single men and a few women trying to quickly get rich on gold.
